Coding for Teachers
A course to help teachers prepare students for future skill requirements
Every day the need for people with coding skills in Europe becomes more obvious. Technology has already become important in practically every occupation but we find that it is a huge challenge for our education system to keep up with this development. While it’s true that in recent years have coding knowledge is creeping into school curricula, these important changes are slow and only limited to a few countries.
This course was created to support all teachers who are willing to take the initiative and learn how to impart these all important coding skills to their students. Not only will teachers learn the Python programming language, they will also learn to teach computational thinking and explore ways of integrating coding exercises into other school subjects, such as (but not limited to) natural sciences and mathematics.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and for advanced coders alike. We will work in small groups in a pleasant environment right next to the sea. We will adjust our learning tasks on an individual basis to your needs and skills. We will also develop materials together with you that can used straight away in your class.
The course is structured in 3 phases:
1) Preparation Phase
Before the class in Crete we will invite you to the members area of the course site where you can find introduction videos and exercises that get you started right away. We will lead you through 10 steps that get you into coding in no time. If you need any help, we will be there for you. If you find the 10 steps too hard we will adjust the course materials accordingly to make sure you can learn at a level you are comfortable with. Remember, the course’s primary goal is not to turn you into a professional programmer. We want to help you teach your students coding in an exciting and motivating way.
2) Coding for Teachers Class Phase
In this phase you will focus on improving your own coding skills and preparing teaching materials that you can use for your students. In the class we alternate between explaining concepts and elements of programming, giving you individualized tasks, developing teaching materials in small groups, and inspiring you to introduce coding elements in different school subjects. We run this class in a relaxed atmosphere by the sea and give you plenty of opportunity to focus on the learning goals that are right for you.
As a result of the course you will end up with teaching materials optimized for your own needs. You will save a collection of exercises and solutions in your personal online area so that everything will be available to you whenever you need it.
3) Cementing and Support Phase
After the class in Crete we will continue to support you online and we will have individualized tasks for you in order to keep you active. Once again, there are 10 steps for you to go through, spaced out over the 10 months following the class. You will have the opportunity to work on tasks that will make sure that you remember everything you learned. We will also support you and answer any questions you might have. Our intention is to give you the support you need for implementing coding in your classroom and the members area of the course site will provide teaching materials, exercises to brush up on your own skills, and our friendly support.

Do I pay upfront and get reimbursed or does the agency pay for everything?
Your school has to submit an application for KA1 funding under the Erasmus+ programme. The deadline for this is February 5th 2020. When your funding gets approved your school will get the money in advance. We don’t ask you to pay anything until the funding gets approved. Your school determines if the money is paid directly from the school account or if you have to pay first and get reimbursed later.
Can I attend if I have absolutely no knowledge of coding?
Absolutely! The course is designed to take you from a beginner level to a level at which you feel comfortable teaching coding to students. We will individualize the tasks you do so that all participants can learn at the level they are most comfortable with and we will take great care of beginners who want to go at a slow pace or need more explanations.
Does this require the agreement of my school’s administration?
Yes. Your school needs to be behind the application for funding, otherwise you cannot do this (unless you want to participate and pay the course fee yourself). However, in most cases school administrations are happy about active teachers who are willing to improve their skills and bring added value to the school. Speak with your administration!
Can I attend if I am a teacher from outside of the EU?
You can certainly attend the course but the funding might not be available for you. If you are not an EU citizen but you live in an EU country and work for a school there you are still eligible. Certain partner countries are also eligible for this. Check the guidelines of the Erasmus+ programme for details.
Do I have to be a STEM teacher?
While many teachers who participate in our coding courses are STEM teachers, this is not a requirement. In fact, the course encourages the embedding of coding in many different subjects. For instance, you could teach your students how to create simulators for population sizes or programs for vocabulary training. In the course we will work with you to create your own customized teaching materials for your classes.
What if I book and then can’t attend?
First of all: We want you to be comfortable, so we will try to accommodate you. In fact, you can cancel anytime without reason until the 31st of August. If you picked the option without funding and paid 100 EUR we will of course reimburse you. Canceling is as easy as sending an email to courses@eduproject.eu, giving us your signup confirmation and letting us know that you want to cancel.
You can also cancel after August 31st, but at that point we will have had expenses for you already which means that we will not refund the 100 EUR registration fee. However, we certainly won’t send you an invoice and you will have no more obligations.
Is there a restriction on the number of teachers who can attend from my school?
The only restriction we have is the total size of the class. We have a number of slots that are open for each course and as soon as they are filled up we no longer accept any sign-ups. This is why we recommend signing up early and reserving your space.
We have lots of teachers who need training, can we get our own course?
Theoretically this is possible. Feel free to contact us at courses@eduproject.eu and ask. If you have 10 or more teachers we will gladly offer you your private course at a time that is convenient for you.
Enter your e-mail address and we will inform you about the funding opportunities, the deadlines, and available courses. You won't get any spam from us! We will keep your email address private and only contact you with relevant information once in a while.
